SEO or SEA? What companies should do first
SEO works slowly and lasts, SEA works immediately and ends with the budget. When which path makes sense first.
Updated on
SEO stands for search engine optimisation and means work on the unpaid search results. SEA stands for search engine advertising, in practice mostly Google Ads: paid ads above or below the search results.
The main differences
- SEO builds up over months. Costs arise for the work on the website and content. The effect lasts, even if the work pauses.
- SEA works within a few days. Costs arise for every click and for management. The effect ends as soon as the budget ends.
When SEA makes sense first
- The website is new and has no visibility yet.
- You need enquiries at short notice.
- You want to test whether an offer or a region is searched for at all.
When SEO makes sense first
- Click prices in your industry are high.
- Customers search for your service all year round.
- The ad budget is tight, but time is available.
Both together
Ads quickly deliver data on which search terms actually lead to enquiries. This data shows which topics are worth the long-term SEO work. Many companies therefore start with ads and shift the budget gradually.
Three questions for the decision
- How quickly do you need enquiries?
- What is a new customer worth to you?
- Who can supply content and handle enquiries?
